Maybe I could be a nurse? This thought entered my mind in October of my first year of teaching. And in October of my second year of teaching. Oh, and during my third and fourth years as well! Why? Because teaching is hard! (And yes, so is nursing but the grass looked greener, ya know).
I didn't know if I could survive so much stress, so many working hours, and sacrificing my Saturdays and Sundays to grading and planning just to keep my head above water. I didn't know if I could take another student cursing at me, or another meeting where parents thought I was falling short. But...I kept going.
I read everything I could about teaching, especially teacher blogs. I practiced new methods. I asked my peers and instructional coaches to help me do this job better.
And here I am, eight years into the teaching profession. I’m accomplishing more than I thought possible during those first few newbie years, but am always looking to improve. Blogs have been a great resource during my career and always provide the inspirational boost I need to carry on.
I started this blog to continue that tradition and encourage other teachers. The Lab is where I will share resources, ideas, humor and some inspiration for my fellow teachers.
Teaching is a tough profession, but with dedication and collaboration on best practices, we can find joy and fulfillment in this work. Welcome to The Lab!
